Foundations of Artistic Research

Danielle Wilde is an Associate Professor of Embodied Design at the University of Southern Denmark, Kolding (SDU). Her research aims to understand how designing with, for and through the full sensorial richness of the human body might transform how design and living unfold in a more-than-human world, positing human embodiment, the climate crisis and the 6th mass extinction as interdependent material issues. German-born designer and researcher Julia Lohmann investigates and critiques the ethical and material value systems underpinning our relationship with flora and fauna. She is Professor of Contemporary Design at Aalto University, Finland, and directs her eponymous Helsinki-based design practice. Julia studied at the Royal College of Art, where she has also taught and completed an AHRC-funded collaborative PhD scholarship between the RCA and the Victoria & Albert Museum. As designer in residence at the V&A in 2013, she established the Department of Seaweed, a transdisciplinary community of practice exploring the marine organisms' potential as a design material. Julia Lohmann’s work is part of major public and private collections worldwide and has received awards, bursaries and support from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the British Council, Jerwood Contemporary Makers, D&AD, Stanley Picker Gallery, the Arts Foundation, Wellcome Trust and Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Dr. Jüri Kermik is an academic and designer with primary research interest in the history of plywood, materials innovation as weö as late Soviet design. As part of his academic leadership and commitment to values of interdisciplinary design, Kermik has evolved a research profile in design curriculum development. He is a member of the Internationalizing Design History research group.

Dr. Karolina Jakaitė (b. 1978) is a design historian and researcher at the Vilnius Academy of Arts Institute of Art Research, co-founder of Design Foundation. Her research specialities comprise design history studies, design and identity, national pavilions, Lithuanian design in the 1950s- 1970s, contemporary design. She has written articles, edited books and catalogues on Lithuanian design, organised conferences, curated design exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad. Her latest publication – a book about Soviet Lithuanian pavilion in London in 1968 "The Cold War Capsule: Lithuanian design in London in 1968" (Vilnius: LAPAS Publishing House, 2019) is presented for the National Book Contest “The Book of a Year 2020”.
